Dal grido pacifista di De Palma a Juno, la ragazza madre di Reitman
la nuova Hollywood del cinema impegnato americano nelle rassegne di Venezia e di Roma

Se volessimo stilare un bilancio, anche per fare un confronto, sulle due più importanti rassegne annuali italiane del cinema internazionale, (quella storicamente più consolidata e non fosse altro che per questo più valida Mostra di Venezia e l’altra, quella più recente della cosiddetta Festa di Roma, non meno desiderosa di affacciarsi sulla ribalta della cinematografia mondiale, gareggiando inevitabilmente con la precedente), dovremmo innanzitutto sottolineare la diversa mentalità degli organizzatori dell’una e dell’altra rassegna, sostenitori di modalità costruttive non propriamente omogenee.
Infatti all’idea fondamentale del concorso competitivo della Mostra di Venezia gli organizzatori romani hanno opposto, il procedimento meno paludato e specializzato della festa popolare, secondo il modello già collaudato della festa dell’unità, col proposito di portare il cinema e la cultura fra la gente, come ha ricordato durante la premiazione Goffredo Bettini, maggiore organizzatore e presidente della Fondazione Cinema di Roma, che ha definito la kermesse romana: “solo una festa popolare, una semplice festa di popolo e non un evento dedicato agli esperti del cinema, che emigrano da un fazzoletto all’altro di festival in modo auto-referenziale. Noi siamo un evento per la gente perché crediamo che la cultura innalzi l’anima delle persone offrendogli delle speranze”. In verità, come ha sottolineato anche il “Corriere della Sera”, un giornale non propriamente ostile agli organizzatori della rassegna, che ha piazzato in prima pagina un titolo siffatto “Roma, tra Oscar e Festa dell’Unità”, la manifestazione, pur sforzandosi di coniugarle insieme, non è riuscita a superare la sostanziale ambiguità, la sua doppia natura di festa o festival. Non sono mancate, inoltre, accuse sulle sottili implicazioni politiche, e un commento ironico dell’articolista sul numero eccessivo dei cinque direttori artistici, incapaci di tenere sotto controllo la rissosa ed agguerrita presenza degli sponsor.
Quanto a noi, per quanto non ce la sentiamo, come ha fatto Veltroni, di condividere l’esclusiva vocazione pedagogica della festa, tuttavia vorremmo per un attimo deporre la lente di ingrandimento della politica, che non di rado è causa di scontri o polemiche di parte, per consigliare agli organizzatori di superare le incertezze che nascono dalla formula non propriamente definita per assumere una direzione più sicura ed originale senza la preoccupazione di doversi misurare costantemente con le altre manifestazioni del genere, in particolare quella di Venezia che inoltre è, a nostro modo di vedere, un po’ troppo vicina nel tempo.
A parte le critiche e le polemiche non sempre disinteressate e costruttive, se ci atteniamo fedelmente ai numeri, non possiamo non sottolineare un bilancio più che positivo per la seconda edizione della Festa del Cinema di Roma che, malgrado la sua giovane età (è questo il secondo anno di vita della manifestazione) ha dimostrato di avere la personalità di un festival già maturo, replicando, anzi migliorando, i risultati della scorsa edizione. In effetti non si può fare a meno di riconoscere che il pubblico ha risposto numeroso, formato questa volta non dai soliti vip che nella prima edizione avevano fatto i salti mortali per non perdersi l’occasione e la novità dell’avvenimento mondano, ma costituito da gente qualsiasi (numerosi anche i bambini) contenti di poter vedere da vicino tanti protagonisti del cinema e maggiormente coinvolti per il ruolo non solo passivo di spettatori, ma anche per poter scegliere i lavori migliori, quali componenti della giuria popolare.
Si deve ammettere, a questo proposito, che la Festa ha inaugurato una formula veramente rivoluzionaria nel panorama delle rassegne cinematografiche, proprio col sottrarre la valutazione dei film a concorso alla ristretta cerchia degli addetti del mestiere, che, abituati come sono a formulare i loro giudizi basandosi su canoni di esperienza tecnica, non sempre dimostrano di essere d’accordo col grande pubblico. Anche la cerimonia di chiusura, tenutasi nell’auditorium dell’elegante sala Santa Cecilia, confermando le aspettative degli organizzatori ha fatto registrare un bilancio più che positivo: 600mila visitatori, 110mila biglietti staccati, 102 film presentati a concorso, 32 eventi proposti di alto livello sono la testimonianza tangibile del successo della mostra. A questi dati c’è da aggiungere la notevole presenza di maestri e divi del cinema, da Bertolucci a Tom Cruise, dalla Loren alla Bellucci, da F.Coppola a Robert Bredford, che, alternandosi sul set, hanno contribuito ad arricchire la festa degli spettatori con la loro presenza e il loro commento.
Non ce la sentiamo, a questo punto, con un’ulteriore rassegna dei numeri, di riferire anche le cifre della Mostra di Venezia, per evitare di aprire un confronto sulla maggiore o minore validità dell’una e dell’altra formula, che innegabilmente hanno dimostrato di avere pregi e difetti, ma vorremmo piuttosto sottolineare l’equanime giudizio e una fondamentale uniformità nella conclusiva valutazione operata dalle rispettive giurie sui film sottoposti al loro vaglio. Non si vuole qui far riferimento esclusivamente al comune e quasi simile risultato negativo patito dal nostro cinema nazionale, che sia a Roma che a Venezia si è dovuto accontentare solo di premi di contorno, quanto piuttosto indicare un comune aspetto positivo che ha caratterizzato entrambe le rassegne: in particolare l’identità di veduta nell’assegnare particolare significato e valore al cosiddetto cinema impegnato, anche se di contenuto e valenze diverse. Per quanto non sia mancato anche all’estero chi ha voluto smentire il ripetuto cliché della morte del cinema italiano, come ha fatto Le Figaro, che con riferimento all’opera di Soldini, Mazzacurati e Greco, ha parlato di un cinema italiano che ricomincia a parlare della società come mirabilmente aveva fatto per il passato, dobbiamo purtroppo dire che all’atto della premiazione nelle due mostre si è sentito parlare poco in italiano, molto nelle altre lingue, soprattutto in inglese. In compenso la nostra lingua ha tuonato forte prima della stessa premiazione, quando l’associazione “Centoautori”, capitanata dal regista Giuseppe Piccioni, ha potuto presentare agli spettatori una video-lettera della durata di cinque minuti per chiedere alla politica maggiori finanziamenti pubblici in attesa di una nuova legge più giusta per la cinematografia. Non crediamo che la crisi del nostro cinema sia dovuta esclusivamente alla gestione politica del sistema della comunicazione e dello spettacolo, più disposto a favorire altre forme più popolari di spettacolo come quello televisivo e sportivo, ma probabilmente essa, pur non potendo essere incolpata da sola degli insuccessi del cinema italiano, certamente vi ha concorso insieme alla preoccupante mancanza di idee degli addetti del settore, fatte le debite eccezioni.
Ma torniamo al genere del film impegnato che è stato prevalentemente premiato o apprezzato in entrambe le rassegne, selezionando quelli che a nostro giudizio meritano una particolare attenzione. Dobbiamo innanzitutto premettere che la nostra scelta corrisponde al bisogno di individuare un filone e una comune chiave di lettura che, senza ridurre il valore di quei lavori che non corrispondono al modello prescelto ( in entrambe le rassegne si è dato ampio spazio alla sperimentazione che, accanto alla rinnovata scrittura del cinema di denunzia non ha trascurato quello di genere, l’esoticamente raffinato orientale o addirittura il noir francese) vuole puntare l’attenzione sulle interessanti novità avanzate dal cinema impegnato americano di oggi. Dal grido pacifista di “Redacted” di Brian De Palma a “Juno”, la ragazza madre di Reitman, corre secondo noi la linea della nuova Holliwood del cinema americano che ha suscitato il comune riconoscimento della critica e del pubblico.
In “Redacted” che, tradotto nella nostra lingua, vuol dire redatto, cioè documento pronto per la stampa, ma a condizione di essere corretto e privato delle cose che non conviene dire o mostrare, il regista americano, narrando la vicenda di un gruppo di marines che a Samarra in Iraq si macchiano di strage e altre nefandezze, si propone di denunziare, inchiodandolo alle sue responsabilità, l’esercito americano, colpevole secondo De Palma di generali massacri e particolari efferatezze. Con la rappresentazione in diretta dello stupro collettivo di una ragazza di quattordici anni, che dopo la violenza subita viene finita con un colpo di fucile alla testa e la sua famiglia sterminata e bruciata, il film si preoccupa di mettere a nudo quello che il potere dell’attuale politica americana si sforza di nascondere velandolo con la propaganda. De Palma, pur non essendo un regista esclusivamente sensibile alla denunzia politica (come dimostra la maggior parte dei suoi film), ha già firmato nel 1989 “Vittime di guerra”, un altro film apertamente accusatorio nei riguardi dell’esercito americano che, a differenza dell’ultimo lavoro, essendo troppo enfaticamente costruito in alcune scene, fa correre il rischio d’insincerità al suo autore. Questo non è certamente il caso di “Redacted”, film che si presenta nella forma di un dossier assolutamente impersonale, dove la mano dell’artista si è preoccupata solo di selezionare delle immagini che per la loro crudezza fossero degne di essere mostrate. La superiorità di “Redacted” rispetto al precedente film sul Vietnam si spiega anche con la più matura disposizione artistica del regista, il quale non si è limitato ad una semplice ricostruzione dei fatti per narrare una storia inquietante, ma ha fatto parlare dirittamente ed unicamente le immagini, che non sono realizzate da professionisti del cinema, ma riprese amatoriali e dilettantesche degli stessi protagonisti, ottenute con l’utilizzo dei telefonini dei militari e altro materiale attinto dal Web (siti Internet, blog, You Tube) con l’aggiunta di qualche reportage di stampa. A di là della diversa resa artistica, il risultato comunque non cambia, (con “Redacted” De Palma fa in effetti un autentico salto di qualità) se pensiamo che l’uno e l’altro film hanno in comune l’idea portante che le guerre che gli Stati Uniti ammantano sotto il vessillo della democrazia generano sempre mostri, sia che si tratti del precedente conflitto del Vietnam, sia che si parli dell’ultima spedizione in Iraq: sono entrambe per i loro risultati due “sporche guerre”.
La prima scena di “Redacted” si apre con la rappresentazione del caldo soffocante del deserto di Samarra, dove un gruppo di soldati americani, fermi ad un check point, sudano non tanto per il carico del loro armamento quanto per la tensione generata dal terrore che sotto le vesti di quelli che chiedono di passare, a piedi o in auto, possano celarsi temuti terroristi. Ci si salva solo sparando per primi senza farsi prendere da alcun rimorso o pensiero umanitario. Questa, fa intendere De Palma, è la loro esclusiva filosofia, quella di cui anche noi abbiamo, purtroppo, fatto drammatica esperienza in occasione della strage di Calipari. I morti ammazzati, iracheni e non, in prossimità dei posti di blocco americani oggi si contano ormai a migliaia. E’ vero che ad ogni check point vi sono dei cartelli che impongono l’alt sia in inglese che in arabo; ma il più delle volte non servono, perché o non sono perfettamente visibili o non possono essere decifrati dalla maggior parte degli iracheni che non sono in grado di leggere e scrivere. Il film, per la crudezza e l’unicità delle sue scene, è uno dei più lucidi atti di accusa della politica estera di Bush. In particolare l’esemplare vicenda di Samarra, dove cinque marines si macchiano dell’orribile e duplice delitto di stuprare prima una fanciulla irachena di quindici anni, e poi di ucciderla insieme a tutta la sua famiglia, è in effetti una denuncia agghiacciante delle torture e violenze subite da vittime innocenti in occasione di abituali azioni di rastrellamento militare. L’immancabile effetto finale, il silenzio raggelante degli spettatori al termine della proiezione è la dimostrazione migliore che “Redacted” ,colpendo duro e nel segno, è un film non solo coinvolgente ma anche in grado di sconvolgere la coscienza di tutti.
Prima di fermare la nostra attenzione su “Juno”, il flm di Jason Reitman che, raccontando la storia di un’adolescente del Minnesota alle prese con una gravidanza indesiderata, ha vinto la seconda edizione della Festa del Cinema di Roma, riteniamo sia doveroso dire qualcosa anche degli altri film a concorso che appartengono allo stesso filone del cinema impegnato americano, a cominciare da “Rendition” del regista Gavin Haad. Il film, pur presentandosi innanzitutto come una dinamica storia di azione, trae il suo spunto iniziale dalla pratica illegale praticata negli ultimi tempi dall’apparato della sicurezza degli Stati Uniti di arrestare dei cittadini stranieri residenti in America solo perché sospettati di connivenza con i gruppi islamici eversivi. Haad, pur giustificando la maggiore attenzione della giustizia americana nei riguardi di quanti sono sospettati di svolgere attività terroristica dopo l’evento tragico dell’11 settembre, sembra voler richiamare quelli cui è affidata la sicurezza sul suolo degli USA ad un uso più equilibrato ed umano della giustizia, e soprattutto meno dettato dalla paura, la quale da sola spiega la facile condanna di chi viene sequestrato solo per un apparente sospetto. La storia, pur dimostrando il massimo della tensione nelle scene girate a Marrakech, in modo più coerente ed equilibrato vive con maggiore interesse nella contesa che vede contrapposti come nemici non un poliziotto e un criminale, ma una donna, Meryl Streep, questa volta nei panni della cattiva e, Jake Gillenhaal, un agente buono della Cia, che eccezionalmente si distingue dai suoi colleghi, rappresentati ultimamente in modo non molto edificante.
“Leoni per agnelli” di Robert Redford , molto vicino a “Rendition” solo per l’esordio e la trama, non per il risultato finale, è giocato tutto sulla contrapposizione fra una giornalista, Meryl Streep e un neodeputato (Tom Cruise) che, per quanto precedentemente stimato, scade del tutto nella considerazione della donna perché si rivela alla resa dei conti un vile (di qui l’agnello del titolo) quando decide di mandare a morire altri in sua vece. Il film non racconta in modo soluto semplicemente una storia, ma è sviluppato in tre episodi, che sono saldati dallo stesso svolgimento nel tempo (tutto si svolge in diversi fusi orari contemporaneamente alla stessa ora) e da qualche risoluzione un po’ artificiosamente concepita: vedi l’espediente di far ritrovare come protagonisti del terzo episodio i due studenti impegnati nella guerra in Afganistan che qui si battono da leoni pur senza speranza, mentre nel secondo svolgono solo un ruolo di contorno, in quanto non colti in azione, ma semplicemente indicati come esempio da un professore pacifista (R.Redford) ad uno studente poco votato sia allo studio che all’azione. Il lavoro del regista, per quanto a tratti avvincente, risulta alla fine onesto, ma retorico per le idee, scopertamente moralista e troppo verboso,
Questo non si può dire certamente di “Into the wild” di Sean Penn, al quale è stato conferito giustamente il premio Fastweb per la sezione Prèmiere, e che, senza nulla togliere a “Juno”, è secondo noi il miglior film della rassegna, per l’intensità straordinaria con cui il suo autore ha saputo narrare il viaggio di “un giovane estremista della vita” alla ricerca di un’irraggiungibile libertà verso terrori sublimi ed indicibili vissuti a contatto di una natura sterminata e selvaggia. “Into the Wild” è la storia avvincente di un ventenne scontento della vita (Emil Hirsch) che abbandona la famiglia per vagabondare fino in Alaska. Ma lo spettatore deve essere avvertito: “Into the wild” pur essendo girato su sfondi naturali di un fascino primordiale, non è l’ennesimo grido ecologista contro la nostra complessa e in parte invivibile società occidentale, ma vuole sottolineare innanzitutto che la natura può anche uccidere piuttosto che sanare le nostre piaghe sociali. Il film, avventuroso, controcorrente e malinconico, che non consente neppure le pause del respiro, pur essendo sicuramente un’invettiva contro la vita comoda, è anche capace per la bravura degli interpreti di carpire per tutta la durata della rappresentazione l’attenzione degli spettatori.
Ma ora veniamo a “Juno”, al quale è andato il premio Marco Aurelio quale miglior film della Festa. Il lavoro di Reitman è certamente una pellicola molto interessante e da vedere, non tanto per la novità del tema, in quanto, dopo “Waitress” , “Molto incinta e “4 mesi 3 settimane e 2 giorn”i di Cristian Mungiu, palma d’oro al Festival 2007 di Cannes, quella della gravidanza indesiderata si può dire sia una delle nuove tendenze del cinema holliwoodiano. In effetti, al di là del tema, la novità del film sta nel fatto che il suo regista ha affrontato il difficile e scottante argomento con un tono assolutamente leggero: in effetti “Juno” è un film anti-aborto con lo stile delle sitcom. Jason Reitman, figlio d’arte del regista Ivan Reitman, per quanto molto giovane, ha già debuttato dietro la macchina da presa con un altro film campione d’incassi, “Thank you for smoking”, ha dichiarato a caldo dopo la premiazione che, pur augurandoselo, non si sarebbe mai aspettato che il film funzionasse al di fuori dei confini americani. Ma quando ha visto la gente ridere ha capito che anche gli altri paesi non sono lontani dalla mentalità americana, anzi gli è sembrato che anche qui da noi pulsasse lo stesso cuore. Una parte cospicua del successo del film egli attribuisce allo stile umoristico della sceneggiatrice che lo accompagna, Diablo Cody, scoperta da uno dei produttori mentre navigava su Internet, che, per quanto sia difficile parlare dei ragazzi di oggi, è stata davvero brava nel costruire all’interno di una sceneggiatura forte i dialoghi del film, riproducendo perfettamente il linguaggio degli adolescenti d’America, rivelatosi nella circostanza universale.
Il personaggio principale della storia di nome Juno, una sedicenne sicura di sé e dalla lingua affilata, interpretata mirabilmente da Ellen Page, un’altra rivelazione della mostra, in perfetta omonimia con la dea pronuba per eccellenza Giunone, nomina sunt consequentia rerum, scopre ad un certo punto di essere incinta di due mesi, ma non abortisce pur potendolo fare comodamente. Il tema dell’aborto, evidentemente si sarebbe potuto prestare ad una diversa e più drammatica rappresentazione, come ad esempio accade nel film di Cristian Mungiu già ricordato, dove una ventenne pagava duramente la sua scelta di abortire contro la legge. Reitman, preso atto che la nostra società è diventata più permissiva, anche troppo, affrontando le complesse questioni dell’amore, del matrimonio e della libertà, dimostra di aderire maggiormente al suo tempo. Pertanto, facendo prevalere l’ironia sul dramma, più che raccontare una storia triste, cupa come quella troppo seria di Mungiu, assumendo una scelta umoristica e sdrammatizzando i fatti, dichiara che nella nostra società anche una gravidanza indesiderata ormai non è più un problema, a condizione però che venga affrontata responsabilmente e senza drammi, come fa la sua originale protagonista.
Juno Mc Guff, creatura insolita e anticonvenzionale, ma abituata a ragionare con la sua testa, malgrado la giovanissima età, si distacca totalmente dal comportamento delle sue coetanee, le quali trascorrono buona parte del loro tempo al centro commerciale, non volendo omologarsi preferisce stare in camera ad ascoltare la musica travolgente degli Stooges. Ma un pomeriggio, più monotono del solito, farà sesso con il suo amico Bleeker, rimanendo incinta senza saperlo. Questo avvenimento cambierà totalmente la vita della ragazza, che dopo aver per pochi istanti preso in considerazione l’idea dell’aborto, deciderà di tenere il bambino, affrontando da sola e a testa alta il suo problema e dimostrando un senso di responsabilità superiore alla sua età. Successivamente, data la prima reazione dei genitori che rimangono scioccati alla notizia, con l’amica del cuore Leah si metterà alla ricerca di una famiglia perfetta alla quale affidare la custodia del figlio che sta per nascere.
Il film che, come si è detto, è innanzitutto valorizzato dal fatto che il regista, pur affrontando temi seri, risulta capace di portare sulla scena una storia accattivante con una giusta dose di humour, si fa apprezzare anche in quanto le situazioni narrate, anche se ironizzate, riescono spesso ad essere così verosimili da escludere qualsiasi traccia di finzione. Assolutamente originale è anche la rappresentazione dei personaggi non protagonisti, a cominciare dai genitori di Juno (J.K.Simmons e Allison Janney) i quali prima annichiliti dalla notizia della dolce attesa, in seguito, sfidando le convenzioni e assumendo un atteggiamento ironicamente compito di fronte ai pregiudizi e al bigottismo della gente, dimostreranno tutta la loro amorevole disponibilità nel volere seguire la figlia nel suo difficile percorso. Così dovrebbe andare veramente nella vita reale, ma nella finzione della commedia dietro l’apparente facilità della vicenda, sotto il velo di una felice disposizione affettiva si percepisce facilmente la tragica realtà della falsità dei sentimenti. Analogamente la coppia a cui Juno vorrebbe affidare il bambino, i benestanti Mark (Jason Bateman), compositore di colonne sonore per spot pubblicitari e Vanessa (Jennifer Gamer), donna manager che non riesce ad essere madre, al di sotto della felice condizione di appartenere ad un mondo in parte privilegiato, lascia intravedere molte più crepe di quelle che il sicuro status alto borghese dovrebbe mostrare.
Il film è ottimamente costruito grazie anche ad una serie ben scelta di elementi di contorno che contribuiscono a dargli una giusta coerenza, a cominciare dall’appropriata colonna sonora fatta di candide musiche di sottofondo e di brani di Kimya Dwson, le ambientazioni realistiche e colorate della maggior parte delle scene, lo studio appropriato del comportamento degli adolescenti, la scelta felice dei costumi della protagonista e dei personaggi non protagonisti.
